Dean Checknita is in the final stages of preparing for his IFR check ride. He put out a call a couple of weeks ago for a safety pilot and I was quick to answer. His goal was to get another 8 hours or so “under the hood” so that he could be sure that he would have the minimum number of hours required before his upcoming check ride.
Over the course of the weekend, Dean and I flew almost 8 hours and a good 90% of that time, Dean was under the hood flying N75382 by relying on the instruments. I learned a lot during these two days. Dean would talk through every move he made and he showed me some great tips for briefing approaches.
On Saturday, October 17, we shot approaches to KEMV, KXSA, KLUA, and KCJR before returning to KHEF.
On Sunday, October 18, we shot approaches to KOKV, W99, and KMRB where we stopped for lunch. We then took off and headed back to KHEF.
Dean is a great pilot and I have no doubt that he will do a great job on his IFR check ride. And he will be the first call I make when I need a safety pilot when I (finally) get started on my IFR training.
Thanks, Dean, for a great weekend in the air! I learned a lot and I am looking forward to flying with you again in the future!
